Ashoka is one of the most celebrated rulers in the History of India.
Life of this great Mauryan emperor has been documented many times. But
what makes him more enigmatic is the transformation he went through
from being a power hungry ruler to an emperor who preached Buddhism
throughout the south Asia. During his accession to the throne Ashoka
killed his brothers in cold blood, during the war of Kalinga he wiped
out a province brutally, killing thousands, turning the rivers red with
human blood. But this war, the subsequent remorse transformed him .
This
story is present in every history book, but what Dwipayan tried to
portray in his book is what lied beneath the transformation, is it only
the brutality of war, or some more deep rooted cause, how was the "best
ruler world has seen" as a normal human being, without the power of his
dynasty? In a brilliantly written historical fiction, these are the
questions the author tried to answer here.
